We feel that research is important because we want to develop products that fit the clients’ needs, as well as the needs of their carers. That is why we do multiple studies to learn more about people with intellectual disabilities, their care environment and the effect the Tovertafel UP has on them.
Specific game features for the Tovertafel UP
When the Tovertafel Original, for people with dementia, was launched in 2015, we soon saw demand for a Tovertafel developed specifically for people with intellectual disabilities. After an intensive design and research period, working together with clients and care workers at Philadelphia Zorg, we launched the Tovertafel UP in April 2016.
- Each game consists of multiple layers, which allows people of differing levels to play the game at the same time.
- The games offer a rich experience with elements that suit their experiential world.
- Play experiences that proved important for adults with intellectual disabilities are sensory stimulation, competition, humour, challenge, and creativity.
Research: Environment has an active influence
Active Cues was curious about the Tovertafel Up’s effects. That is why we asked to final year students to study those effects. Bianca Kwant, an Applied Psychology student, went to two locations of the Philadelphia Zorg care home to study the direct effect of the Tovertafel UP. She observed the factors joy, sadness, anger, fear, physical activity, and social interaction in two groups made up of 12 individuals with intellectual disabilities.
This research showed that use of the Tovertafel UP saw an increase in joy, social interaction, and physical activity in people with intellectual disabilities. It also showed that participants were more likely to work together and social interaction also increased.
Evaluation user experience of Tovertafel UP
Besides the effect the Tovertafel UP has on its clients, we were also curious to learn more about users’ experience. In another study, Lianne, a graduating student of Healthcare Technology at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, determined for Active Cues whether or not the use of the Tovertafel UP could be improved for clients and employees. Like Bianca, Lianne observed people using the product at two locations of the Philadelphia Zorg care home.
Lianne’s research brought to light a number of ways in which the games could be improved to better suit the needs of the clients and the care workers. With these results, we of course set out to improve our games.
