UP

The Tovertafel UP is a fun care innovation that encourages adults with a learning disability to take part in physical activity and social interaction. The challenging games can be played either independently or with supervision.

What is the Tovertafel UP?

Are you looking for a social and energetic activity for people with learning disabilities? The Tovertafel UP brings people with moderate to serious learning disabilities together in their natural surroundings. The result? A lot of fun and a lively and comfortable atmosphere. The games are unique because of their grown-up character and their accessibility for people with differing developmental levels. The Tovertafel has added value for each client: some actively join in on the fun, while others take part from a distance.

The Tovertafel is a little box that can be mounted on the ceiling, for instance, above the dining room table of a day care or care home. Inside the box is, among other things, a high-quality projector, infrared sensors, speaker, and processor that work together to project the games onto the table. Because the colourful objects respond to hand and arm movements, clients get to play with the light itself.

How was the Tovertafel developed?

Research is central to what we do. Not only did the Tovertafel emerge from the PhD research of Hester Le Riche, all our products are the result of a thorough design process. At Active Cues, we always have several students doing research for their studies.

We develop the Tovertafel games through the co-design method, working together with the target group and their environment. We talk with care workers and family members and each new game is tested with the clients. Because we actively involve them in the design process, we can tailor our products to their needs and interest, and thereby ensure that games will stimulate them as best as possible. Scientific research

The Tovertafel is based on scientific research. In her PhD research, Hester Le Riche studied how the physical and social environment affect activity among older people with dementia. She also did a literature study into their play experiences.
